Designed by Taiwanese designer Shih Ming-Sheng, Adventure Whale AR smart glasses combine augmented reality and generative AI to support children with dyslexia in learning to read. Awarded at the Red Dot Design Concept Awards, the project blends real-time text recognition, phonetic assistance, and gamification to turn reading into an intuitive and motivating experience.
These smart glasses integrate augmented reality and generative AI to analyze and interpret text as the child reads. They display visual aids like word highlighting, syllabic separation, and customized phonetic guidance. The goal: to deliver a responsive, dynamic reading assistant tailored to the specific challenges of each child.
Thanks to real-time text recognition, the interface gives immediate feedback on pronunciation, suggests corrections, and guides the child step by step. Augmented reality anchors the experience in the child’s visual space, making learning more intuitive, less stressful, and more engaging than traditional methods.
Dyslexia often leads to early frustration with reading. Adventure Whale AR takes a gentle and playful approach to help children overcome those barriers. Rather than medicalizing the process, it turns reading into an accessible, fun, and non-stigmatizing activity through interactivity and immersion.
The design includes game mechanics to boost motivation: level progression, virtual rewards, and AR character interaction. Every correctly read word or sentence becomes a small victory. This gamified structure turns reading into an adventure that builds both confidence and curiosity.
Adventure Whale AR sits at the crossroads of interaction design, immersive technology, and inclusive education. It’s part of a larger movement to create intuitive, human-centered learning tools. As a speculative design concept, it explores how emerging tech like AR and AI can address contemporary learning challenges like dyslexia.
Because Adventure Whale AR sends a strong signal in the edtech design space: an award-winning concept that harnesses AR and AI to tackle a widely overlooked issue — making reading more accessible and empowering for dyslexic children.
