Matsuda is a Japanese eyewear house known for handcrafted frames made in Sabae. The brand stands out through design inspired by art and architecture and the use of precious metals and Japanese acetate.
Founded by Mitsuhiro Matsuda, whose fashion house in Tokyo embodied a blend of craftsmanship and technology, the brand has promoted an “art-as-fashion” approach from the outset. Its ready-to-wear and eyewear designs became well recognized in the 1980s, establishing a culture where objects are conceived as expressions of design. This philosophy continues to define Matsuda today.
Frames are crafted from titanium, stainless steel, sterling silver, and 18k gold, often with hand-applied engravings and lacquers. Japanese acetates, made from organic cotton-derived plastic and aged for stability, provide rich colors and durability. Signature details include side shields, saddle nose bridges, and custom-designed components. Lenses are CR-39 with 100% UVA/UVB protection, seven layers of anti-reflective coating, and optional polarization.
The range includes Sun and Optical lines, along with Heritage (limited re-editions), Rimless, and categories presented as Essential, Collaboration, and Precious in the collection filter. Heritage editions are often numbered.
Each model is handmade in workshops in Sabae, Japan, through up to 250 steps, involving 13 artisans, about 71 hours, and as long as two years from concept to completion. Frames are polished and inspected individually. While the brand highlights its cotton-based acetate, no detailed sustainability program is published in the consulted sources.
Matsuda does not operate its own boutiques; distribution is through a global network of optical retailers and specialty stores listed in its store locator. The official website offers worldwide shipping with express delivery under FAQ conditions.
Matsuda is positioned as an independent Japanese luxury eyewear label, emphasizing handcrafted production, fine metalwork, manual finishes, and limited Heritage editions.
